Personal Notes

Summer Breeze

We begin this issue with a successful renovation story, and it’s as much about the process as anything else.

Designer Yvonne McLeod listened to the homeowners’ needs and wants, DUO Building Ltd served as contractor, and the results are on full display in “Creative Synergies in Sunningdale.”

Most of the rest of this issue embraces some aspect of summer. Somehow, in youth, summer days seem to stretch out forever. I can recall plenty of excitement, but also boredom creeping in at times. Now, the season seems far too fleeting, so let’s get at it. Summer has arrived in all its glory, and we’re glad to help you take full advantage of all it has to offer.

“Summer Days, Summer Nights” is our fashion theme in this issue. And our Marketplace pages focus on outdoor entertaining. Warmer days beckon us outside, and Lisa Brandt offers scientific proof that this is a sound instinct to listen to in “Good Day Sunshine.” With some caveats — hats, sunscreen, hydration, and such — the benefits of getting out into nature enhance body, mind and spirit. Don’t take my word for this; Lisa consulted the experts.

Bruce Fyfe does double duty in this issue. “Redefining the Distance of Escape” reminds us that a getaway or two helps make summer special, and a road trip can be short and still oh so sweet. Exploring some great adventures that lie literally around the corner and just down the road, Bruce highlights magical rural destinations in Middlesex and Lambton Counties. Happy trails!

Is there a better smell in summer than food on the grill? Bruce is also an excellent cook, and he particularly loves to work with fire. He introduces us to a few influential members of the local barbecue community in “Where Smoke Meets Story,” along with some helpful resources. The variety of foods people want to grill today, including vegetables, new cuts of meat and seafood, and a rich assortment of rubs, spices and sauces, takes barbecue to another level.

The intrepid chef Jamie Oliver’s latest book, Grill, has arrived just in time for summer, and Sue Gordon has tested it out and selected three new recipes to share with Lifestyle readers. Oliver is a huge grilling enthusiast and offers encouragement and expert instruction in equal measure. Equipment and techniques have come a long way since Dad fired up the Hibachi for some burgers and hot dogs! Sriracha corn, anyone?

With plenty of practical tips gathered through personal experience, along with her usual whimsy, Sue Sutherland-Wood offers summer gardening tips in “Falling in Love Again.” I especially appreciate Sue’s understanding that gardening is work that should be tempered with pauses to enjoy one’s accomplishments. I’ll do some weeding, but I will definitely raise a glass to that this summer.

Cheers,
