So much of what goes on above the shoulders can affect everything from our outlook on the day to the quality of our lives. If we accidentally cut a finger, it won’t change how we feel about ourselves the way a spot of dandruff or an outbreak of pimples will.
If the eyes are the window to the soul, the head is the house, and we all want to have curb appeal. Whether we know it or not, the state of our hair and skin reveals a lot about our overall health and whether or not we’re taking loving care of ourselves.
Therapies for the face, scalp and hair are always improving. Let us introduce you to some of the latest ways to improve the condition of “the house.”
THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE
“It all starts with the scalp,” says Maria Bikas, owner of the eponymous North London salon and spa for nearly 20 years. Maria has opened a new, second location in southwest London, MBSalon Boutik Therapeia, with elevated hair services, a fashion boutique and London’s only authentic Yume Head Spa system.
Yume Head Spa is a premium Japanese full-flat reclining salon scalp treatment. It’s much more than just a rinse; it’s a ritual designed to assist with stress reduction as well as scalp health. The process uses fresh – never recycled – warm water to cleanse and vitalize the scalp while providing deep relaxation.
“It promotes healthy hair growth and stimulates blood flow in the scalp and body,” says Maria. “It’s a true well-being experience.”

The new location at Colonel Talbot and Southdale Roads was thoughtfully chosen, planned and designed. From its two-sided fi replace to the coffee bar, every detail was implemented with intention. The clientele is not meant to rush in and rush out. MBSalon Boutik Therapeia expands on Maria’s belief that “beauty should feel personal, calm, and meaningful.”

In addition to two Yume Head Spa chairs and seven hair styling chairs, MBSalon Boutík Therapeía offers curated boutique clothing. The boutique area is separated from the private treatment rooms and the salon, so clients can luxuriate in their experiences, secluded from where visitors drop in to shop.

Maria says this expansion is the realization of a dream. “This next chapter allows us to expand our vision while staying true to who we are,” she says.
YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD
Nadine Sabino is the surgical nurse educator and laser expert at Yazdani Aesthetics on Waterloo Street. She and her colleagues are seeing a definite trend in what clients want from their face treatments to reverse skin aging.
“There’s been a big shift in the last couple of years, where people are wanting the skin to have a beautiful, filtered glow to it,” Nadine says. “They want natural results as opposed to overfilled and frozen.”

An enhanced but seemingly unaffected appearance can be achieved with the use of skin treatments like chemical peels and microneedling to encourage collagen production. Fillers and Botox do have their place and remain popular for specific concerns.
“As we age, we lose volume, and so filler can replace that lost volume, often in any area of the face,” Nadine explains. “Botox blocks the muscle from being able to move or fold that skin, so it improves the skin.”
Sometimes people think treatments delivered by laser will involve wrapping them like a mummy afterward and necessitate taking weeks off work. Nadine says Yazdani has an extensive selection of laser treatments to treat a variety of skin concerns. The lasers’ after-effects are broad as well.
“There’s a wide range of laser treatments, and some have no downtime. The Broadband Light or BBL laser is great for sun damage, for redness, and for pigmentation. We have people come in on their lunch hour for a treatment and go right back to work.”
The team at Yazdani has been helping people look and feel better for more than 15 years. Skin treatments have evolved to the point where virtually any unwanted skin condition now has a solution.
“We can treat pretty much any concern with the skin, from sun damage to rosacea, melasma or scarring,” Nadine says. “A lot of patients have acne scarring or scarring from chickenpox.”

Whatever it is, a dark patch of skin, a scar or another condition you perceive as a flaw, facing the world with it can make a person feel self-conscious. Nadine says she derives satisfaction from removing someone’s barrier to full self-confidence.
“We make them feel good again. And for me, it’s a great feeling, too.”

Whether it’s a young man whose hairline is receding or a woman in menopause whose formerly lush locks are thinning, hair loss can be upsetting.
HAIR’S THE THING
Whether it’s a young man whose hairline is receding or a woman in menopause whose formerly lush locks are thinning, hair loss can be upsetting. The medical term is alopecia, and it can have many causes.
One thing those who notice they’re losing hair should do is act immediately, says Charlene Jones, co-owner of Artistic Esthetic Med Spa on Central Avenue. She’s a trichology specialist experienced in the use of Alma TED, a hair restoration procedure.
“It’s an ultrasound-based technology that delivers a potent peptide into hair follicles. It stops the shedding and preserves the hair you have.”
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as powerful messengers to the body. When delivered in a serum by Alma TED, these particular peptides promote stronger anchoring of the hair and stimulate the follicles. They’re basically feeding the scalp to grow better hair. All of this can lead to fuller, stronger, more resilient hair that stays on the head, not the pillow.
“It puts hair in the anagen (growth) stage, from the exogen (shedding) stage,” explains Charlene. Clients get excited when they start to see less visible scalp and more hair.
This treatment is pain-free and non-invasive. The gentle ultrasound stimulates the scalp as it works to restore it to good health. And it’s a process that many people aren’t aware of as an alternative to a hair transplant and other surgical options. Alma TED is just one, albeit a powerful one, in a range of treatment options that Charlene can perform.
For hair transplant patients and anyone else who wants a fuller look, Charlene offers scalp tattooing. Transplant patients especially benefit from this process to cover up scarring and add pigment to the scalp.
